What is Integrative Medicine?

Integrative medicine (IM) is a healing-oriented approach that takes into account all aspects of someone's lifestyle, including their overall health. IM focuses on the therapeutic relationship between practitioner and patient, is rooted in research, and utilizes the full range of therapies available.

Integrative medicine typically uses a combination of conventional and complementary therapies, while functional medicine is more likely to use only complementary therapies.

One of the main goals of integrative medicine is to prevent chronic disease by promoting healthy lifestyles. This includes diet, exercise, stress management, and sleep hygiene. Integrative medicine also seeks to identify and address any potential underlying causes of disease using traditional medical tests and procedures.

Complementary or alternative therapies—which include acupuncture, herbal medicine, homeopathy, meditation, massage therapy, naturopathy, therapeutic touch, yoga —are those practices that fall outside of the realm of conventional Western medicine. Integrative therapies may use some types of complementary and/or alternative therapies as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Integrative medicine strategies include mind-body techniques, such as meditation and yoga, to help reduce stress.
