PSORIASIS TREATMENT

Psoriasis is one of the more commonly known skin conditions. The condition can be classified into several types. The most common type is plaque psoriasis. It occurs when skin cells overgrow on your skin, causing a rash. Often there are red marks and flaky white patches that resemble scales on the inflammation. Symptoms may appear anywhere on your body. The most common locations are your knees, elbows, and scalp.

Psoriasis can be mild, moderate, or severe:

FAQs

  • Red, scaly patches of skin.
  • Dry, flaky skin that cracks and bleeds easily.
  • Skin that burns or stings.
  • Itchy or swollen skin.
  • Bumpy, thick fingernails.
  • There is a red patch of skin surrounded by pus-filled blisters (in more severe cases).

The immune system causes psoriasis. The immune system helps to protect your body from infection and disease. Psoriasis occurs when your T cells (a kind of white blood cell) attack your skin cells incorrectly. As a result, your skin cells produce and swell rapidly.

Psoriasis is more common in people ages 15 to 35. Psoriasis is often genetic, and it runs in families. This condition is not contagious, so you cannot get it from another person, or if you have it, give it to another person by touching them. Psoriasis cannot be spread to other areas of your body.

You cannot prevent psoriasis, but you can control it. Patients with psoriasis may go for long periods without symptoms. At other times, psoriasis can flare up or worsen. Keep away from factors that can trigger flare-ups, including:

  • Being stressed
  • Having dry skin
  • Smoking
  • Irritations on the skin
  • Colder weather
  • Certain infections (like the common cold or strep)
  • Diseases that weaken the immune system
  • Certain medicines (such as beta-blockers)

The treatments for psoriasis are not one-size-fits-all, but that’s a good thing. At High Life Integrative Medicine, we work with you individually to determine the most effective psoriasis treatment – or a combination of psoriasis treatments – to reduce or eliminate your symptoms.
