Acne
Acne is a fairly common skin condition characterized by blemishes and spots. It’s most common among teenagers and young adults, but it can affect people of any age. The spots and blemishes are commonly called “pimples.” Acne is mostly caused by overactive oil glands that produce too much sebum. The sebum mixes with skin cells and clogs the pores. Bacteria can grow in clogged pores, causing inflammation.

There are four main types of acne:
- Acne Vulgaris is the most common type of acne. It's characterized by blackheads, whiteheads, and inflamed pimples.
- Acne Rosacea is a red, inflamed rash that often appears on the cheeks and nose. It's most common in adults older than 30.
- Acne Conglobata is a rare, severe form of acne that causes large, inflamed cysts.
- Acne Keloidalis Nuchae is a scarring condition that affects the back of the neck.

What causes acne?
Acne’s exact cause is unknown, but it’s thought to be caused by a combination of factors, including:
Heredity – you may be more likely to develop acne if your parents had the condition
Bacteria – Propionibacterium acnes, a type of bacteria, can cause inflammation and lead to acne breakouts
Hormones – changes in hormone levels can trigger acne breakouts, especially during puberty and adulthood
Exposure to certain chemicals – some cosmetics and hair products can aggravate acne
Stress – psychological stress can make acne worse
Preventing acne breakouts is important to keep from getting scars. If you have mild acne, over-the-counter products might be enough to treat the problem. Moderate or severe acne usually requires treatment with prescription medications, which can have side effects.
Although acne is not dangerous, if left untreated, it has the potential to cause permanent scarring on your skin. If you are worried about acne or acne scars make an appointment to speak to one of our experts at High Life Integrative Medicine about our acne treatments.
